He served in the VA Militia and made application for pension , claim #4613 22 Mar 1834. His brothers Daniel and Ferdinand also served. Philip was an Indian spy. He lived in Botetourt (later Giles) from 1779 to 1832 and probably until 1835 when he moved to Boone Co.

John Martin Harless was born at sea on the Winter Galley (the vessel carrying his parents to America).
He was baptised 11 Mar 1739 in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, PA. Martin received land on Sinking Creek in Clover Hollow (Giles Co) from his fathers will and made his home there, farming and raising stock. He was in Capt. Looney's Co. VA Militia during the revoltionary war.

In 1738 Philip and Anna along with her brothers (Johan) Michael, (William)
Augustine, Henry and Daniel, immigrated to America. They sailed from Rotterdam at the mouth of the Rhine River in Holland to Philadelphia on a galley called Winter. On 5th Sep 1738 in Philadelphia, Philip made his oath of allegiance.

Anna Margaretta Price was bapt. 21 Sep 1713 died in 1784 near Christiansburg Va. is buried near her husband in the Harless cemetary at Long Shop. Married Johan Philip Harless in Offenbach Germany (Lutheran marriage register).
Johan's Will is dated 21 Mar 1772, pro 19 May 1772, rec Will Book 4, p. 493, Augusta Co. Augustine, Henry, Daniel Price and Charles Rush were named Administrators to his Will.Philip and Michael Price, bought land in the New River area (now Montgomery Co) in 1745 and 1750 but did not move there until later. He lived in Augusta Co. about 4 miles from Natural Bridge and a number of Children were probably born in this location. He received a patent for his land in 1762.
All sons of Philip and Anna served in the Va. Militia against the British and Indians.
The family had a Lutheran Family Bible which had been passed down through several generations of the Harless family.
