John Swanger resided in Carter County Tennessee as early as 1796. He is the oldest known of the Swanger to have lived in the south. It is believed that he was born in Pennsylvania but lack proof. It is also believed that he is the grandson of Jacob Schwanger who immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1747 and who is the progenitor of most Swangers and Swongers in America. He had 9 children.
