Served as Sergeant in Co. C, 7th WV Cavalry. He was 5' 6 1/2" tall, dark complexion and dark hair. In November 1862 while scouting at Tornado, he slipped and fell, his gun striking a "piece of hewed timber causing same to discharge, the ball striking him in the right side, ranging in and lodging under and dislocating his shoulder blade."
