John Smith Sr. came from Edinburgh, Scotland in 1857 on the ship Tuscarora. He settled in Little Washington, Pennsylvania, then Charlottesville, Virginia. He moved to Marmet, Kanawha County, which was once known as Brownstown. Information from Katie Taylor.

Information from the 1880 Washington Distric, Kanawha County Census records show William was a farmer, his brother Tillman B. Childress (b. 1857) lived with him as did Tillmans son Smith Gibbie (Name is in question)b. 1875. Also a housekeeper named Ortez, Elizabeth age 20 lived in Williams home.
According to Alice Bowman Gillenwater, W.L. always wore a white button down shirt with sleeve garters and a black bow-tie.
Enlisted in the 7th WV Calvary CO. L. on Mar 31, 1864 as a private and was discharged on Aug 1, 1865 as a Corporal. Also is listed as a Private in the Kanawha County Scouts under Captian Robert Brook Company, age 18. Rolled date: September 26, 1864, enrolled: Jan. 27, 1864 in Kanawha County for 1 year, Mustered in Jan. 27, 1864. Volunteered in US service March 25, 1864, enlisted in US service Jan. 27, 1864.
William was buried on Oct 3 1931 as stated on a document from the Bartlett Brothers Funeral Home of Saint Albans burial expenses document.
William died of Ilia-Colitis. He had suffered from Kidney Heart and stomach trouble, Piles, bladder cystitis, Rheumatism and was hearing impaired according to Dr. C.B. Cann of Olcott, Dec 7, 1921. He claimed to start having Rheuatism problems during the raid on Lynchburg Va. in 1864.
William was about 6 feet tall, weighed about 180 pounds, blue-grey eyes and light hair according to military records.
