John (79) lived with his son Charles E. on the 1920 Malden, Kanawha County Census. He was drafted into the military in 1863 as his name appears on the draft list that is shown in the book "Kanawha County Images" by Stan Cohen on page 101. It is recorded in the special 1890 census that John served in the 28 WV Infantry from May 1861-July 1861. I have found no record of a 28 WV Infantry and WV was not a state until June 1863. Family history states he was a Confederate Army Veteran who lost his farm after the war because his money was no good.
Government records from WV Archives: John P. Whitlock was in the Kanawha County State Guards, Private under Captian Woodson Blake (Blake Woodson) Company "A". Enlisted May 1861 at Malden. Remarks: Served 12 months. Also, John served in the 153 Virginia Militia as a private under Captian Lewis Belcher I Company. From Jack L. Dickinson' s book "8th Virginia Cavalry" : John P. Witlock, Pvt. Company K 8th Virginia Cavalry, Took oath and sent north March 22, 1865 at age 24, miner, resided Kanawha County West Virginia. His name is also listed in Dickinson's book "Confederate Soldiers of Western Virginia" as John P. Witlock, Pvt. Co. K 8th Va. Cav.The 1900 Brownstown, Kanawha County, West Virginia census records show John (59) and Elizabeth (58) were married for 38 years, 11 children, 6 living. Joel P. and Sam H. were living at home. I only have record of 8 children.
John and Elizabeth was married April 2, 1863 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia according to their marriage record in Kanawha county courthouse. John's parents are listed as Preston and Nancy Whitlock. He was a Farmer and a Laborer.
John's death record stated he died of Nephnitis at age 89 years and 6 months. He was a laborer.
John Preston Whitlock new grave marker was purchased by his granddaughter Ruby Whitlock Korn. It states his birthday as June 17, 1836. Census and military records would indicate about 1840.
Elizabeth Dearing Whitlock died sometime between 1900 and 1920 as she was in the 1900 Kanawha County cesus and was not in the 1920 census. John was listed as living with his son Charles E. in 1920.
LDS records show her name as Dearien and she married a Mr. Hodge. Was John Preston Whitlock her second husband?
